Non-Local Mechanical Metamaterials

Abstract:

Non-local metamaterials [1-4] exhibit significant departures from traditional local materials, enabling enhanced control over wave propagation and manipulation. By incorporating concepts from quantum fluid dynamics, we examine the emergence of roton-like excitations, which reveal novel behaviors in these structured media. The analysis employs advanced theoretical frameworks and computational models to demonstrate the impact of non-locality on mechanical and acoustic wave phenomena. Experimental validation is achieved through bespoke metamaterial designs, showcasing robust performance across various frequency ranges. Our findings suggest potential applications in cloaking, energy harvesting, and novel waveguiding technologies.
