Cut-cell methods for discontinuity fitting

Abstract: Compressible fluid flows exhibit discontinuities in the fluid state, either in the form of shocks or material discontinuities (contact discontinuities). These interfaces can have arbitrarily large deformations, for which unfitted numerical schemes are well suited. One such method is the cut-cell method, which consists in applying a Finite Volume method on cells cut by the interface. We will first present results obtained in the application of the cut-cell method in the case of fluid-structure interaction. We will then review the numerical scheme with the goal of extending it to cut-cell Discontinuous Galerkin methods with arbitrary moving interfaces. Finally, we will show how the cut-cell method can be combined with shock-fitting methods as an alternative to shock-capturing schemes.
