Acoustic Manipulation of Particles and Objects 

Acoustic waves offer powerful, non-contact means to translate and rotate objects. This seminar highlights two distinct manipulation mechanisms:



  •     Acoustic Vortex Beams for Rotation: Carrying orbital angular momentum via a helicoidal wavefront, vortex beams exert radiation torque on small objects. Using a focused transducer coupled to a thickness-varying phase disc, we generate an acoustic vortex in water and experimentally reconstruct the 3D acoustic field using Rayleigh-integral-based holography, confirming the vortex topology behind the focal spot.
  •     Surface Acoustic Waves for Vibrational Transport: Travelling surface acoustic waves (SAWs) can drive particles horizontally across a substrate—a mechanism promising for sorting, micro-actuation, and surface cleaning. Interestingly, particles are observed to drift opposite to the wave direction. This reverse drift can be quantitatively captured by accounting for particle deformability with the Method of Memory Diagrams, based on the Hertz–Mindlin analytical solution. The backward motion arises either from asymmetric frictional sliding or wave-synchronized hopping.
